About Pakistani Classical Music Pakistani classical music differs from western classical music in the way it is performed. The latter is fixed, with scores written down and the same composition performed by different musicians or musical groups. The former is improvisational in nature, and even a master cannot produce the exact same performance twice. In this regard, Pakistani classical music may be considered similar to improvisational jazz. A raag is the central feature of Indo-Pakistani sub-continental classical music tradition. Most raags are specific to a season, a time of day, or an occasion. Each has its own character and mood, and aims to transport the listener into that mood. The same raag can be improvised to create countless different tunes.
