Damian La Grange's previous release Beautiful Distraction gave comparisons to Twenty One Pilots, Allan Rayman, and Jon Bellion and was featured in Spotify Canada's New Music Friday playlist. It is also nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award and was the category prize winner in the 2017 Canadian Songwriting Competition. Self-produced by Damian, "Pictures" has an eerie yet nostalgic feel with dark piano, dreamy synths, and ambient guitar. It begins as a delicate piano ballad that progresses into driving indie rock and ends with a cinematic climax. Lyrically, it is written from the perspective of someone disconnected from their childhood innocence and feeling buried by their mistakes made in adulthood. "Take my pictures off the fridge, we both know I'm not that kid now, momma" is carried with conviction by Emily Vay's soulful voice that is a nice contrast to Damian's percussive, rap influenced vocal.
