This is a recording of J.S Bach's Cello Suite #1 like you've never heard it. It is played on an Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI), which is like a synthesiser you blow into. The sounds are all electronic, but you can control them by your breath, which allows much finer control over the sound than, say a keyboard. This music is performed by a human being, it is not computer generated music, even though the sounds are electronically produced. Bach wrote the suites for a string instrument that had a limited ability to play chords or more than one note at a time, but the music is nevertheless very suggestive of polyphony. Bach achieves this by the extensive use of arpeggios and other broken chords. The EWI has the possibility of holding a note while another is being played, and so this is used extensively throughout this recording to accentuate the chordal structure of the music. In addition, the synthesizer was programmed to the just temperament rather than equal temperament to obtain bright, clear chords.
