As a composer and performer Rebecca manages to marry the often mutually exclusive elements of Classical, Jazz and Popular music into a potent synthesis that provides her debut recording, The River of Life, with a truly stunning range of material, all unified persuasively by the power of her musical voice. This is a brilliant recording in every way and features many luminaries of the music world. The powerful bass provided by Tony Levin, of Peter Gabriel fame, is the root of her interesting use of Jazz progressions while the impressionistic piano voicing's of chords allows lead players to flavor each piece with Classical tones. For several numbers that lead is skillfully played by Charlie Bisharat on his violin. With plaintiff melodies that soar through the upper register he also anchors the listener with his rich lower tones as well. One piece, "Another Time, Another Place" is a lovely pas de deux between the heart-rending cello solo by Eugene Friesen and the eerie, mystical murmurings of English horn skillfully and soulfully played by Jill Haley. Two songs feature the beautiful quality of the Lyricon, played by master Premik Tubbs whose playing can only be described as unspeakable joy. As if this weren't enough Rebecca provides space for world beat percussion orchestrator Jeff Haynes, a Pat Matheney pillar, to move the listener along with an upbeat, danceable pace. The structure of all Rebecca's original compositions is that of a popular form and each song has a lyrical quality that suggests a succinct story without words. Her instrumental pieces provide the space in which diverse listeners can create their own unique story while being swept away by the emotional quality of each musicians virtuosic playing. Truly a sensual pleasure for the ears to be awash in this musical river!
