Phil Dole's journey as X-Bax began with a weekend submerged in Earth's 1993 album Earth 2. Phil had done his share of experimentation, including a brief stint playing Router (as in the power tool) in the Vancouver noise supergroup Glob, but he now had a sense of how to focus his impulses. He holed up with a friend and put together In Search of The Brown Note, a tongue-in-cheek framework for sonic exploration, including the Earth-influence "Electrolog". He was soon asked to join a newly forming Chicago drone collective that eventually evolved into the power-ambient group Chord. Phil continued to work as X-Bax (either alone or with an invited helper) during lulls in Chord activity. This box set collects material from 2003 through 2015 previously distributed by Fractional Farthing (on the Atomic Mouse Recordings and Secular Pineapple labels), but does not include material that X-Bax has recorded for other labels (such as Witte Dood and Silber Records). Disc 1 contains the album In Search of The Brown Note (2004) plus an outtake which later appeared on the Sound In A Vacuum Volume 2 compilation. Disc 2 contains the two tracks from disc 1 of the the album Dronetime (2007). Disc 3 contains the "Afdaling" single (2009) plus three other tracks from the same session (later released digitally as Lijken in 2012), followed by two one-off tracks ("Flight Into Chord" which was recorded on a commercial airline flight during an electrical storm, and "Acoustica"). Disc 4 contains the entire 60 Cycle Hum album (2013) and a slightly remixed/extended version of the of the Merry X-Bax 3" vinyl record (2015). Disc 5 contains the album The Sum of All E plus two previously unreleased remixes of "Ali (Baba)" done for a proposed 7". Disc 6 contains the New Drone Fades album.
