They say that the eyes of a man are the windows to his soul. Well, if you get close enough to look into the eyes of an assassin, his soul may be the the last thing your eyes witness. With his third solo LP, “Soul On Fire”, ethemadassassin allows you to get close enough to catch a glimpse of the soul of a seasoned assassin, and what you witness may leave you hypnotized, like a moth to a flame. “Soul On Fire” embodies a rare, mildly-aggressive approach by E, as he splatters a back drop of soul-influenced productions, with poetic images of the make-up of his inner man. He leaves no depths unexplored, sharing with the listener stories of lost loved ones, dangerous desires, unhealthy relationships, while also sharing the wisdom he obtained from it all. Upon ethemadassassin’s intro to “Soul On Fire,” he invites us into another chapter in the book of his life, forewarning us that, “the way this plays out, a miracle’s my only way out/Day in and day out, I go for broke for a pay out.” On the albums lead video single, “Can’t Get Enough,” E explains his addiction to gross financial gains (by any means necessary) with rhymes like, “Its a damn shame the things I did to build my treasure/Now my name hold the kinda weight a scale can’t measure,” while also expressing that no matter how much he gains, its never enough, “I turn 10 into 20, food turns that back to 10/So I just bet it right back and earn 10 back again/Then I turn 10 back again, see I turn a package into numbers/flip back and forth like a safe when cracking in.” The lyrical prowess of ethemadassassin on “Soul On Fire” is a definite breath of fresh air in today’s swagger-driven rap era, and his carefully, hand picked production of soulful samples is the perfect compliment to the portrayal of passion, that is his soul...on fire.
