The three E’s of Frinj are: eclectic, electric and eccentric, and the fourth is: exciting. When Jess ‘Wild Child’ McKinney began this musical adventure, she married whimsy with gravitas to create sounds that have feet tapping, bodies jerking and gears turning in perfect syncopation. Hailing from San Diego, by way of San Luis Obispo, and most recently San Francisco – Jess is as Californian as a grizzly bear, with a power in her voice that rivals it’s roar. She has gathered an eclectic (and international) group of crazies from SLO and SF that each brings their own unique flavor to this musical feast. Speaking of spirit animals, the other members of Frinj include a Sunderban tiger, a Canadian wolf, an arctic fox, and a sun-soaked alligator lizard. Their instrumental styling ranges from off-beat and subtly contagious to a rock and roll frenzy with a tribal beat that evokes visions of impassioned dancers around a bonfire. Together they sing of freedom, searching, brokenness and hope with stories that breathe life into the struggle of being human and the joy of encountering the divine. With influences as varied as Whitney Houston, Radiohead, princess Diana, mother Theresa, the pacific ocean and last weekend’s barnyard hoe-down, it’s hard to pin down Frinj’s sound with something as limited as mere human language – it must be heard to be understood, and felt to be appreciated.
