by Jonathan WidranThe normal reason a member of a successful band steps out on his own is to express something he had to inhibit while playing among the ensemble. Steve Laury is a fine and fluid guitarist who often added badly needed punch to the smooth but -- at least in the early days -- somewhat middle-of-the-road sound of Fattburger. However, despite some frequently peppy playing, too much of this solo disc rings about as bland as your average Fattburger project. The tunes are pleasant and listenable enough, just not very memorable or exciting. Fellow San Diegan Ronn Satterfield (of Checkfield) adds some nice piano work, but in general, Laury doesn't forge an individual style apart from his group. He later left Fattburger and at one point disappeared off the radar even as his former band continued to thrive with new guitarist Evan Marks.
