"Chimes," The original Tonight Show Theme was written by Stan Zabka and Al D'Artega when Stan was Associate Director of the show. The "March" version of Chimes was later selected as theme of NBC Network Sports. His version of Chimes (Christmas Time), in which a jolly band of carolers sing lines from traditional Christmas carols in counterpoint to a string orchestra, was first introduced by Jack Paar, early Tonight Show host. As the recording was broadcast over studio speakers and Jack had TV cameras pan the audience, the NBC switchboard in Rockefeller Center lit up like a Christmas tree. The song became an instant hit. The year was 1957. The only Christmas song that topped it on the music charts was the perennial favorite, Little Drummer Boy.
