The lights are dim and the exposed ceiling reveals pipes and valves usually hidden, like an architectural secret whispered in your ear. The only sound is the gentle hum of current passing through endless yards of cable and a few dozen analog machines that mysteriously turn voice into physical etches on a roll of used 2-inch tape. There’s an antique toaster collection in the kitchen. This is not a place of slick urban cosmetics. This is where music is made. Welcome to the Rogue. Five Star Trailer Park sits in the warm cocoon of the studio on a frigid night in January, probably in the very same seats as some of their musical heroes – Hawksley Workman, The Barenaked Ladies, Alanis Morisette, and Blue Rodeo – have sat in the past. Simon Greer has just finished a screaming track on guitar, leaving the ears in outright protest, and lead-singer Nick Spence – sweat dripping down his face – catches his breath between takes. The band is frustrated. Something isn’t right. “What do we need?” someone asks. “Too aggressive? Too sweet?” James Paul, the band’s multiple Juno-award winning producer at the helm of the sound board, leans toward the singer and speaks. “I want you to testify.” This sense of belief is what powers Five Star Trailer Park, an emerging band from Toronto's vibrant independent music scene. Drawing comparison's to bands as varied as the Foo Fighters and Ryan Adams, this sextet is reputed for songs crafted with beauty and tension. With this conflict in mind Five Star has named their highly anticipated new album 'The Fight that Broke your Heart,” a collection of tight, hook laden, melody-driven rock songs. It's one of the best rock records I have heard in a long time." -Slavo Kovac, Indigo Music Formed in 2004, Five Star Trailer Park’s past accolades are plenty. Their previous CD release was held at Toronto’s Reverb to a beyond capacity-crowd of nearly five hundred screaming fans. They followed this up by playing to over 10,000 people at Nathan Phillips Square for the United Way of Greater Toronto. The band then toured Ontario and Quebec in a relentless effort to get their music out there. More recently, Five Star Trailer Park performed to a sold-out crowd at Tattoo Rock Parlour, one of Toronto’s hippest new venues, with touring comrades the I Spies. The stage was still warm from the sweat of Sum 41 and Avril Levign. They recently completed a residency at Toronto’s music mecca C’est What, through their friendship with booking agent Crispin Giles, also 2008’s North By North East program director. It’s my pleasure to introduce Five Star Trailer Park: Nick Spence is a front man with so much energy and passion onstage, it sometimes appears as thought he’s about to explode. Once a folk singer but now a rock star, not much is left of his acoustic roots. Simon Greer is a guitarist with atmosphere. His hooks are reminiscent of The Edge and Pearl Jam’s Stone Grossard. Paul Gorrie is a songwriter’s songwriter and in many ways the architect of the band. On guitar, his musical influences are of a more classic nature, including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Pete Townshend. Aaron Henry plays keyboards and brings a sense of class to this otherwise rogue outfit. As a musician, he’s fluent in everything from classical piano to gospel organs. Dan Black is a bass player who’s been through it all. Having toured with Warner as a member of Staggered Crossing, his chops are next to none. Matt Bennett, sits at the kit and is an extraordinary new addition to the band. He brings with him unexpected rhythms and an acute indie sensibility. Five Star has a history of producing powerful live performances and is returning to the stage in 2008 with a pocket-full of breathtaking new songs assembled under the watchful eyes and ears of renowned Toronto producer James Paul. There is already much buzz surrounding “The Fight That Broke Your Heart,” which will be released at Toronto’s legendary Rivoli on Saturday, May 31st.
