Huaʻi means to reveal, to break forth, unveil and seemed be-fitting as this is my first album reveal onto the Hawaiian music scene as a Hawaiian Slack Key guitarist, singer/songwriter, and composer. There are seven songs on this EP, four of which are original compositions, one an original instrumental, and three cover songs. What inspires me to write is the natural beauty that I’m surrounded by here in the islands. From the birds in the sky, to the flowers on the trees, the power of the ocean, lush green valleys impregnated by majestic waterfalls, starry moonlit nights and the hula dancers that share the stories, how can you not be inspired? More important though is that I’ve come to understand this… “pono au ke kuleana e hoʻomau ka ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi hana au kēia i na haku mele.” It means that “I have a responsibility as a Hawaiian, to perpetuate the language and I do this through writing and composing songs.
