Hailer is a band of three that met while looking for a similar path. Whilst on said path, they developed their style and way of life as musicians and song-writers. With five years of escapades under the Hailer belt including three EPs, singles and tours - Phil, Angus and Scott resolved to lay it all down for their first long player, Good Canyon. Following some personal adventuring in the summer – Gus taking up the guiro across the Gulf of Mexico whilst Phil worked on his swag-living in the great beyond – Hailer gathered in Sydney in March 2010 to embark on recording Good Canyon. Keeping things local, they assembled a small clan of tried and true individuals to help extract the sounds from their heads and out onto tape. The tracking was completed in blurry four days at Damien Gerard studio’s Balmain bunker, with finishing touches added at the Judson ranch in the Blue Mountains - complete with producer Liam Judson’s (Cloud Control, Belles Will Ring, Lovetones) self-patented and mysterious echo chamber. The recording method was simple – set it up, let it loose and keep the tape rolling. The last 12 months has seen a maturing of the band. The sonic ambition exposed in the summer ‘09 Sunny Letters sessions saw an undeniable need for an extra pair of hands and feet, enter long-time friend and jazz-piano pusher Greg B. The songwriting process changed organically from guitar centered rock n roll to a more melodic and stripped back form, which was then built upon by a variety of instruments and sounds. There was no formula, no strict process…just a band in a room playing songs how they saw fit. The title Good Canyon cryptically surmises exactly that, a band determined to make the music they want to hear. The lyrics writhe between surrealism and unrestrained emotion. Themes traverse whilst retaining a spook of continuity. The record rolls from the sweet and dreamy to the deep, paranoid and mystical. Hailer’s Good Canyon recalls the musicality of Wilco and Radiohead, the psychedelia of Velvet Underground and Spiritualized, the swagger of the Rolling Stones and Television and the songwriting ethos of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. The record will take you up and down, inside and out - a journey through Hailer’s Good Canyon.
