"Psychology" is the third electronic album by songwriter and keyboardist Maxx Silver and was almost three years in the making. All the songs within are about different states of mind, as the music moves from darkness to light. A dreamlike state pervades much of the music in the atmospheric "I'm Not Awake" with a haunting and effective guitar solo at the end. "Monsters" (which is a single) is more pop-hip-hop style, and in terms of mood is quite a jolly song with the lyric "The monsters they come out to play". Good use is made of a trumpet between verses. Lyrically it is about the thoughts that lurk deep in the mind. "Stazione",(Station) another single, is about where we are in life and concludes that time is precious, after an "early warning" from "Maria who lives on the hill" There is a slight nod to the style of "Goldfrapp" The title track "Psychology" is at first glance an unusual love song, written to someone with a personality disorder. However it is hopeful song. The lyric says the love between them is "unconditional" It is an atmospheric pop song and quite unliike anything else with its combination of trumpet, comforting synthesisers and electric fuzz. "Batello" also a single is about telling a lover ( who does not seem to mind!) that you are leaving her for someone new,. The boat to the other side of the lake being the metaphor for a change in a life. It is more of a rock ballad with a beautiful climax and some added guitars. "Disorientation" is a noisy thumping dance track though also with a hint of woozy carnival where it becomes a drunk waltz half way through! "Virtual World" is about someone who is tied to his computer in search of his "Virtual Girl" and thinks that "Going out is over rated" It has a dramatic and frenetic introduction and instrumental section and is definitely a song for these times. "Gatekeeper" is a long, dance orientated track which has that rarity, a Maxx Silver rap where he takes the persona of the Gatekeeper, a character who defends your mind from psychic attack which comes from nasty spirits. There cannot be many songs about this! Susana Secret plays keyboards in the synthesiser only "Morning Fog" which leads to the optimistic "Choose Hope", also an instrumental, which has a Japanese music influence. "Nessuna Informazione" is Euro pop and sung mostly in Italian. It is about not being able to communicate with your lover. The epic "Where Everything Becomes Light" relates the story of a holiday romance and all the heady emotions that brings and is a euphoric and life affirming piece of music . The album concludes, however with the complete opposite. "Brimstone" would more likely be played at your halloween party, and is a very dark instrumental piece. So, with all this going on both lyrically and musically, its not a pop album in a traditional sense but is an accomplished and varied musical journey. Maxx Silver likes pop dance and electronic music, but wanted to do something in combining these elements with this collection. As a result its not just another album , but it is one that you should add to your collection.
