简介
A long career with the Boston Pops and Boston Symphony was enjoyed by Chester Schmitz, performing the great orchestral repertoire. In 1971, he was the first Pops member to solo in the Evening at Pops TV series, as he became Tubby the Tuba, with Julia Childs narrating and Arthur Fiedler conducting. From his very first concert as Boston Pops conductor, composer John Williams wrote special solos for Chester and featured him in the TV taping of Carnival of Venice. He dedicated to him his Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra, premiered in 1985, during the Boston Pops 100th Anniversary season. In the Boston Symphony and the Pops, in addition to performing on bass tuba, he also played all of the euphonium/tenor tuba parts in the orchestral repertoire. Leonard Bernstein wrote a euphonium solo for him in his Divertimento for Orchestra, composed in 1980 for the Boston Symphony's hundredth anniversary season.
