Escape Artist is the collaboration of rapper Craw and producer Matty Trump. The two met through mutual friend, Shizzy (of Character Assassins), and decided to create this album. The album includes features from the likes of fellow Ventura native, Kontra (aka Kapital K), renowned graffiti artist and skilled rhymer, Kub, and the legendary wordsmith, Blueprint (of Rhymesayers and Soul Position). Escape Artist is a dive into Craw's perception. Lyrically, he narrates the past few years of his life with captivating and clever story telling throughout the album, while still maintaining the hard hitting punch lines and syncopated patterns we've come to love. Matty Trump demonstrates that he is still at the top of his game in this project. With hard hitting beats like "Black Lung" and emotion evoking melodies like those heard in "Bass". Perhaps the most telling of all songs is the title track, "Escape Artist", in which Craw describes his struggles with family, health, money, and happiness, over a masterfully constructed synth heavy and piano accompanied backdrop. From the first bar of the song, "Started in March of '13 / Doctor hit me with the scalpel / Had to fix my back issues / Asked if I'd get back to rap soon / He said it's doubtful" to the end of the track, it's like every word is heard with anticipation and spoken from the soul. Escape Artist is a consistent piece on both ends. It clearly demonstrates the uncanny compatibility that exists between Craw and Trump and leaves the listener with one question. When do we get more?
