Art Gallery Jazz is Galt MacDermot's first album. He had just finished his music education in South Africa and returned to Montreal where he gave a concert at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on April 25, 1960 with bassist Stan Zadak and drummer Pierre Beluse. This album was recorded shortly after by engineer Colin Kerr with the trio in the studio and was produced by Brian Smith for Laurentian Records.
