Franklin Thompson (aka Francois JaBoi) is a unique individual in that he is a university professor, a politician, and and accomplished singer/songwriter. Although there are others who exceed him in vocal ability, there are few who can match his ability to write songs with a relevant social message. Chris Manak (Peanut Butter Wolf) of Stones Throw Records has tabbed Thompson as one of independent music's better artists. His writing style is greatly influenced by Sly Stone, Larry Graham, and David Bowie from yesteryear, and The Roots, Toni Braxton, and Dr. Dre of today's music fame. His best writing genre is funk, but the listener will easily note that he is able to cross over to other styles such as pop, R&B, adult contemporary, contemporary gospel, and progressive country. Thompson is not the typical artist in that he doesn't put out products to entertain people. Although you can easily dance to his songs, they are mostly written to educate and inspire social change and promote family values. If you are searching for a Grammy winner or someone who will be the next pop star, Franklin Thompson is probably not your guy. Drop back ten yards and punt your boy over the crossbar. BUT, if you are searching for true meaning in life, if you need inner healing, if you desire to see the dawning of a better world, Thompson's music is not only cathartic, it is larger than life. And don't get it twisted. Yes, Dr. Thompson has a serious side, but he is not a bore that puts people to sleep. Don't let his ministry fool you; he can be one of the most fun and engaging people you will ever meet. Bottom line: His music is not designed to win awards and compete for air time, but rather to inspire people and relationships to be healthier.
