简介

This band formed in the backstreets of Pioneer Square, and played a lot of shows in and around Seattle. Here Victor Harte, Kevin A. and Allen Ensign are captured on tape at Peak Studios by the gifted engineer and musician Chip Butters. The five songs selected here come from the sessions at Peak Studios, in Columbia City, and the place was home to the End, and the Mountain radio shows live broadcasts. By some good stroke of fortune Butters was able to lock out the place for the Whores of Babylon for over a period of some months, one winter, and the band thus recorded in an old brick theater house that way. Butters studied the place and found the sweet spots for room sound, in addition to standard and above; recording techniques, used on all the instruments, and vocals. After Vic set up his kit, Luke St. Kimble (Devilhead, Shew Aquarium) sat down and wailed for about two hours. Basically, he helped Butters fine tune the kit. Butters is also a fine drummer and guitarist, and last time we at Enki heard, he had been doing work with the popular band, Playland. Anyway, all members of the first Seattle incarnation of the Whores of Babylon had punk roots, yet all three were together tremendously melodic rock at one of its finest moments in long forgotten undeground days, the last days of grunge, as it were, but more on that later. The following history penned by "Sanchez" states: " Formed in early summer of 1999. We all came together with a similar vision musical vision; to rock balls and rock 'em with abandon. We found we had musical compatibility after getting together for a jam session at a friend's house. We had all paid our dues playing in countless bands that would probably go nowhere. Brought up in the hardcore, punk rock, D.I.Y., is where the band gets its heart and soul. Taking cues from Crazy Horse, The Stooges, and The Spiders From Mars, this is a Seattle trio to be reckoned with as one of the best trios of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Having made it into the finals of Jim Beam's Battle of the Bands, and recorded a live demo at Peak Studios, the band offers a fresh "power sound" to the regular pop fare Seattle has offered of late." The above critique was to appear with the original release, by Enki-Music (enkimedia/enkimusic&film) of which around 250 copies were printed. Around 150 copies circulated, and the original paper casing copies sport some great photos by HIlary Harris, and simply gothic graphics by Arnis Sarma. Enkimedia has decided to release a thin line version of the original released in 1999, with CD Baby! I suppose the original issues are now collectible, and they were stocked and featured at few cool record stores for awhile in Seattle, but now the music is in cyberspace, where it belongs, for all to hear. The CD Baby reissue-release retains the original cover photo by Rex Rystedt, with some Hilary Harris photos in some copies, as well as new Rex Rystedt photos. Enkimedia is proud to have worked with all the folks involved with this project. The recording was mastered at Masterworks by Barry Corliss, and was produced by Chip Butters and the Whores of Babylon. Copyright words and music by Allen Ensign 1999, however, "Love To Do" was composed by Allen Ensign and Bill "Mudboy" Lackey" (recorded by Seahorse 1991). The original paper cardstock editions are #ENKI MUSIC EN0500, and the new # for the CD Baby version is en0209.
