Ostara is Dermaptera’s eighth CD, recorded in 2016. The album was recorded using some improvisational techniques on a number of different instruments, as well as overdubbing of tracks in order to balance impulsive creativity and deliberate sound building. Our main idea for Ostara was thinking about the way spring sneaks in, through grey and frozen days, and almost before you know it, the trees are budding with new leaves and your mind fills with fresh ideas. We hope the album will have a similar effect on listeners. Kathy McMenamin and Kevin Hassett are Dermaptera. A husband and wife duo, we have been making music together since the turn of the millennium. Kevin has been playing bass since the early eighties, and has perfected his individual style of playing multiple string chords on the bass. This album features him playing baritone guitar, which he's been perfecting a play style for over the past few years. Kathy plays the synthesizer, and adds signal processed vocals to some songs. Her background includes a decade of training and performing for voice and piano, but she had been away from making music for several years before Kevin convinced her to start up again.
