Palinckx专辑介绍:by François CoutureThe last time Palinckx worked with a chamber ensemble, it was for the wonderfully mad The Psychedelic Years, released in 1996. The album had also featured singer Han Buhrs as a guest. Shortly after, he became the group's lead singer. As a lyricist, he quickly introduced Henry, a strange man with multiple personalities. Hints of a larger cycle had been peppered on It's Frontal Dog ("Henry's Waltz"), Momentum & Wag ("Don't Be Late," "Dream 13 Revisited") and in live shows (in particular, "Henry's Void" performed during the 2000 Palinck.xl tour). On Henry: 15 Scenes About a Threesome Man we finally get the full picture. Me, Henry and Mr. Bones share a brain and deal rather well with it, until the day a dame walks into the picture. "Please leave home the other two / I'm not into gangbangs," she says. After careful reflection, Henry kicks out his doubles, but the void left quickly becomes unbearable so he lets them back in. Despite some clever images and nice poetic twists, Buhrs' story is deceptively simple, even predictable. The music on the other hand is not, although the days of The Psychedelic Years' cut-and-paste complexity are mostly over. With his lyrics, Buhrs also brought to the band a new song-oriented approach. Doo-wop, boogie and rock ?n' roll references replace Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd in the scrapbook. The Asko Ensemble (which includes strings, horns and percussion) does a fine job negotiating the awkward fusion of contemporary classical and avant-rock writing, but Palinckx themselves have a harder time integrating their music and energy to the format. Some pieces work out well, like "Don't Be Late," "Jack the Dripper," "Henry's Truth" and "Here's to Our Triumvirate," but other ones come very close to sounding pompous or blurry. Compared to the sharpness of Momentum & Wag released a year earlier, Henry makes for a confusing and less convincing listen.
