I am proud to announce the official release of my latest recording – Oh Baby. Greg Englert – Sydney, Australia – Composer, co-producer. Scott Bennett – Los Angeles, U.S.A. – Lead vocal Vinnie Zummo – New York City, U.S.A. – all instruments, backing vocals, co-producer, arranger Tim Ross – Florida, U.S.A. – Vocals. Steve Turnidge - Ars Divina/UltraViolet Studios, Seattle, U.S.A. – Mastering A tribute to the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach boys with soaring vocals, stunning backing harmonies and that wonderful surf music guitar feel. To celebrate 25 years as a music producer Sydney based composer, producer, musician Greg Englert decided to re-visit his previously released music. Rather than re-mix and use alternate takes Greg started a project to have his favourite singers and musicians from around the world re-imagine his compositions in their own special ways. The result is a series of epic special edition recordings ranging from Pop and Rock, through Jazz and Swing to Civil War Movie genres. ‘Oh Baby’ was originally a Dixieland jazz composition ‘Mee Woo’s Blues’ released in 1990 as part of the album ‘Wockwongs’ (Ozz jazz 001), (Available at all good on-line stores) by the composer Greg Englert. As the series involves re-imagining previously released songs of Greg’s by other people, he went for a rummage through his compositions and found the second song he ever wrote called Mee Woo's Blues. You can imagine his surprise when he pulled out the original music and found written on the back of the paper "Originally titled 'Gee Baby don't you know what you're doing to me" with a full lyric....... So he recorded quick demos and came up with the idea to do the song in a Beach Boys style. He sent the demos to his buddy Vinnie Zummo (former Joe Jackson guitarist, studio musician, composer, arranger) in New York City with instructions to do a Beach Boys version of the song. Vinnie proceeded to build a really wonderful arrangement of the song featuring great guitars and multi-layered vocals a-la early Beach Boys. Vinnie and Greg decided that such a song really needed a West Coast US voice to sing the lead vocal. There was really only one person Greg could hear singing this song and that was his friend Scott Bennett from L.A. Scott is a Grammy winning, Golden Globe nominated multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer and producer who has created songs and performed with rock’s legends: the Beach Boys, 15 years with Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, David Crosby, Billy Joel, Neil Young, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and Elton John. Brian Wilson has called Scott “the most talented musician I’ve ever met.” Scott is one of the few people to have written songs and produced albums with Brian Wilson. Greg contacted Scott and he was more than happy to help. Despite only having a small window of opportunity to record the vocals, (small side issues such as a Golden Globe Nomination, ceremony and Brian Wilson concerts!), Scott produced exactly what Vinnie and Greg were after. The final ‘icing on the cake’ comes from the uber talented Tim Ross, creator of the animated cartoon band ‘Apology None’. Tim contributed the vocals for the middle eight section of the song! Thanks Tim. (Don’t forget to check out Tim and Apology None). The track was mastered by Steve Turnidge from Ars Divina/Ultra Violet Studios in Seattle, Washington. The result is a homage to Greg’s musical hero Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, with soaring vocals, lush harmonies and lots of “my baby” through a song originally recorded as a Dixieland jazz blues! Enjoy! Greg Englert, Sydney, Australia, 2016 PS please check out other songs from the 25th anniversary special edition releases for more amazing treatments of my songs!
