简介
Dear classical music lover, Thank you for acquiring this recording. I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it. For many years this project has been on my mind and I am thrilled that I finally was able to bring it to fruition. I have made many discoveries about Bach, the cello and about myself as well during the recording process. Similar to many cellists, I first started playing the Bach Suites at a very young age. I didn’t realize back then that I’d be learning and relearning these pieces throughout my whole life. One of my early musical memories of playing Bach is from fourth grade. At my school’s yearly exam, I performed the Menuets from the First Suite. To my dismay I didn’t receive a high mark because of my apparent excessive use of rubato. I hope I scaled down a little on that habit, at least in Bach! In my opinion the Suites are the most amazing jewels in the entire cello repertoire. Every single movement is an incredible piece of art, beautiful by itself but also fitting perfectly into the larger mosaic of the complete composition. On an even smaller scale, every note is like a little pearl that needs to be treated with the utmost care by the performer. This allows notes to shine to their full potential and to make the musical phrase beautiful. What is also remarkable about the Suites is that they can speak to everyone: connoisseurs of classical music and novices alike. I have witnessed this phenomenon frequently when performing Bach in different venues around the world. My vision for this endeavor was quite clear from the beginning – to record in a way that would be most enjoyable to the listener. I much prefer cello recordings that are intimate, transparent and clear. This gives the listener the feeling of being in close proximity to the instrument. Every note is heard with crystal clarity, phrases are easy to follow and Bach’s musical ideas are well understood and fully appreciated. Having a fabulous instrument loaned to me was obviously a huge help. The Testore cello is easily one of the best instruments that I’ve ever played on. It has best of both worlds: a very soloistic upper register with a stellar A string as well as a deep and smooth bass. Also, being from 1702, it is approximately twenty years older than the Suites, which were written around 1720 according to many scholars. That fact alone is incredibly awe inspiring to me. Personally, I feel that with the release of this recording I have reached a big milestone in my life, both as a musician and a recording artist. This has been a fascinating journey for me. Thank you again for taking time to listen to this recording of Bach’s beautiful Cello Suites. I hope you enjoy! Dariusz
