简介

Brian Woodbury is a recently retransplanted Los Angeles songwriter, having spent the last 14 years in New York. Equally at home in the worlds of New York's downtown music scene, musical theater and pop, he's most at home when straddling all three. Woodbury began performing at the age of 11. He studied musical comedy songwriting with Tom Lehrer, and music composition with Bernard Rands and Pauline Oliveros. He has collaborated with numerous songwriters including Van Dyke Parks. He has written theater scores, instrumental pieces, dance and television music and hundreds of songs. Woodbury's new CD The Brian Woodbury Songbook, features a host of singers, including Jill Sobule, Terre Roche of the Roches, David Yazbek(composer/lyricist of Broadway's The Full Monty) and Sean Altman of Rockapella. A concert version of this project featured Lisa Loeb. Other recordings include All White People Look Alike ("a rare pleasure," Recommended Records), Brian Woodbury and his Popular Music Group ("18 gems," Option) and several compilations. He orchestrated Forbidden Kiss by vocalist Najma, a CD of the classic Indian film songs of S.D. Burman. For TV, he wrote the theme song for Pepper Ann, and co-wrote the theme for Teacher's Pet, both Saturday morning cartoons on ABC. He is the supervising songwriter on Disney's Book of Pooh and Jim Henson's Bear in the Big Blue House, both on the Disney Channel. In music theater, Woodbury has collaborated with his sister, actress/playwright Heather Woodbury. Together, they wrote and performed the revueTwentieth Century Limited. Woodbury is currently developing an original musical, Killa Vanilla, set on a Polynesian island, featuring surfers, drug rituals and a French nuclear test. He is an alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. He founded and led several bands including the avant-new-wave Some Philharmonic, the 14-piece new music/jazz ensemble Variety Orchestra and the downtown Popular Music Group. He received commissions for performances of The Brian Woodbury Songbook at Dance Theater Workshop and La MaMa in New York, and has performed at Fais Do Do in Los Angeles.
