The song is about an individual's past relationship with a significant other with 'dark green eyes', and how this individual feels about the time and circumstances of the relationship. It recounts a younger version of himself who's made mistakes in caring about things that shouldn't have meant as much to him, where he regrets many of his actions but understands that the past can't be changed.
