I dream in music. I always have. For most of my life, I figured that the songs I heard playing in my dreams were reflections of the music I heard on the radio or from commercials on TV. One day last year I woke up having written an entire song in my dream, and it was by no doubt all original. The melody, the lyrical hook, even the tempo all came pouring out upon my waking up. I immediately wrote it down and headed to my home studio. I recorded the song “Ire” that day, written from a dream, and in the following months I began creating other songs from my dreams. This was the start of an entirely new way to express myself, and the beginning of an EP that breaks the barriers I had created for myself by paying too much attention to the outside world and the confines of my waking mind. So I call this next record “Imaginations”; a collection of songs written almost entirely from my dreams. The lyrics, melodies and moods were captured upon waking up from the music that was playing in my dreams. Rather than calculated and meticulously arranged, they are a free floating expression of my subconscious, organic and wistful and with a sense of history that while for the most part fictional, somehow seems very personal to me. Now, I won’t pretend that every song here lacks any waking effort whatsoever. There were certainly times when I had to pull form my experience as a songwriter and fill in the gaps that existed between the randomness of my dreams. But overall, the germ of what I created here was born out of my sleeping mind. The thing I learned is that “Imaginations" is less about construct and control and more about ‘letting go” and being at peace with raw creativity. It’s about accepting the imperfections of talent and celebrating them as a source of humanity. A humanity I feel is all too absent in today’s music.
