简介

Wolter Wierbos专辑介绍:by Steven LoewyThis is a straight reissue on CD of the LP by the same name, with the addition of one track, "Doek," which was recorded more than 19 years later. Solo trombone recordings might not be everyone's cup of tea, but for sheer fascination, there are few who can equal the machinations of Wolter Wierbos, whose distinctive, crazed, yet entertaining style charms while it impresses. Wierbos is one of those few trombonists almost always worth hearing. He takes chances, explores new territories, and expands the vocabulary of the horn. If you ever wanted to know what sounds the trombone is capable of producing, you will likely be astounded by this recording. From whispers to cockamamie growls to roller coaster rides all over the terrain, Wierbos is in a class of his own, gurgling, trilling, and exploring the limits of range and technique. In his hands, the instrument has no boundaries: it is played with percussive fervor on "Clic-Clac/Fade," as the lips set the tone with focused breath and air; with multiphonics on "Brummel"; and with a concentration on the lower register on "Oink-Oink." Through it all there is a magnificent sense of exploration, as though Wierbos is a kid who has just discovered the candy store. There is not a weak spot on any of the reissued tracks, which makes "Doek" all the more disappointing, with its more cerebral and esoteric but less emotionally visceral approach. It confirms the dictum that "more is less": Although "Doek" is much longer than any of the other tracks, it is slower and less enticing, taking time to build. Despite the track's shortcomings the album as a whole is one of the best displays on disc of the improvised trombone, and a treat to hear
