简介
This is an astounding record by a first time recording artist which offers reflections on the world and our relationships through a mixture of sounds and style. David Guy started writing music as a way of catharsis for issues in his personal life that he felt he needed to get out. Through his acoustic guitar he created music that is angry, melancholy, upbeat, reflective, and optimistic all at once. The tracks on his debut CD speak to the depth of personal reflection and experience he feels. “Undertow” is a guitar-driven tour de force that has touches of hard rock, grunge, pop, acoustic rock and psychedelia with the artist’s voice as a channel for the emotional expression these songs hold. A wide range of musical influences in David’s own life can be heard throughout this record- artists such as Neil Young, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, R.E.M., Dire Straits and Pink Floyd. This album could have been made in the mid-70’s from the sound of it and the music reflects that raw and unpretentious era in rock history-before disco took over. Some of the standout songs are the opening rocker “Nickel For Your Soul” which comes at the listener with a full head of anger right out of the gate. “Me And Myself” may be the best rock song about introversion ever written and includes the classic line “…you’re so in love with your own voice, you got yourself erect...”. “Learn To Hurt” is a haunting acoustic number that speaks to the loss of innocence in all of us. The title track is an eerie song about the pressures of drugs and depression on the youth of our world. “Knee Deep In the Purple Sea” is a stirring song that will have every listener recalling the first time they fell in love. “The Things I Never Will” is an epic track about opening up one’s soul while “Cut” is a grunge rocker about estrangement asking “…how do I cut you out of me?”. The album ends with the instrumental “Embraced” which the artist describes as “the closest thing I could put into song about how I feel around the ones I love.” All in all, this is a stellar debut from an artist who is sure to create much more great music in the future.
