简介

Some of Mitchell Stone's "Songs for Peace" are based on real-life themes and actual events. An example is "Pink Ribbons Beat Breast Cancer." It's an optimistic song about the potential cure for an affliction that affects far too many women, and some men (with the ladies being the song's focal point). It's the inclusion of this song in this album that prompted Mitchell Stone to donate ten percent of the profits from the album's sales to the American Cancer Society. PINK RIBBONS BEAT BREAST CANCER (TRACK 6) Nine beats an eight / Flush beats a straight / Love beats hate / And I love women // Pink ribbons all around / Love and hope abound / Ribbons of pink make me think / Of women, I've found / Docs don't have every answer / But if ribbons beat cancer / Cancer's goin' down // Pink ribbons mean so much to me / Maybe some day they'll go away / 'cause there won't be any need to display / Pink ribbons, pink ribbons // Women are the number one source / Of love, of course / Take those ribbons and pin 'em / And we'll keep winnin' // Pink ribbons all around / Love and hope abound / Ribbons of pink make me think / Of women, I've found / Docs don't have every answer / But if ribbons beat cancer / Cancer's goin' down // Pink ribbons mean so much to me / Maybe some day they'll go away / 'cause there won't be any need to display / Pink ribbons, pink ribbons // Survivors fightin' for the cause / They're the best there ever was / Their spirit keeps on keepin' on / Welcoming life back with each new dawn / "Don't miss a day," they say, "don't even blink - / Just pin up those ribbons and make 'em pink" / Pink ribbons, pink ribbons // Pink ribbons all around / Love and hope abound / Ribbons of pink make me think / Of women, I've found / Docs don't have every answer / But if ribbons beat cancer / Cancer's goin' down // Pink ribbons mean so much to me / Maybe some day they'll go away / 'cause there won't be any need to display / Pink ribbons, pink ribbons, pink ribbons, pink ribbons The album's title cut promotes world peace through love and music: SONGS FOR PEACE (TRACK 2) I am only human, so I must admit disgust / Where's the next powder keg in the Middle East? / Who shot who, and who's to blame for violence in the streets? / These feelings must be addressed / So I struggle to suppress and fight 'em creatively / With a worthwhile activity // I write songs for you, and I write songs for me / I write songs with words of love / That'll never cease / I thank God for health, and my dignity / And I write songs for peace / I write songs for peace // Songs for peace, for Mexico and the Japanese / For Russia, Cuba, China, Aruba, Israel, and Iran / I write for world peace--that's where it's at, man / See, I can't stand to hear / That anyone should live in fear, here...or anywhere // I write songs for you, and I write songs for me / I write songs with words of love / That'll never cease / I thank God for health, and my dignity / And I write songs for peace / I write songs for peace // If peace could only come to all around the world / What a beautiful place Planet Earth would be / Every man, woman, boy, and girl living in harmony / No more crisis, no more strife / Much more serenity in our life / If peace could only come for you and me // I write songs for you, and I write songs for me / I write songs with words of love / That'll never cease / I thank God for health, and my dignity / And I write songs for peace / I write songs for peace / I write songs for peace / I write songs for peace / I write songs for peace Mitchell Stone writes the true story of a real American hero: a three-time US Marine who also served--and died--as a San Diego police officer, JEREMY HENWOOD (TRACK 13) Jeremy Henwood served his country at home and abroad / With three tours of duty, he did a great job / Captain Henwood was a troop you couldn't ignore / Defending our country on foreign shores / A Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan / At home in San Diego, a policeman // A boy in McDonald's was in need / Without enough cash to get food / Jeremy bought him lunch / He was always doin' somethin' good / Bought a Coke and burger for little Daveon / One more act of kindness, Jeremy, and then you're gone // Jeremy got back in his squad car and was shot in a baseless attack / In San Diego town, a hero is down / Three times a Marine in Afghanistan and Iraq / But his biggest mistake was comin' back / Shot in his cop car while the sun was bright / In City Heights that afternoon / He died the next morning with the setting moon // Killed with a shotgun by a crazy man / When he stopped at a light that day / Sirens and people screamed in the streets / But it was too late to save / A Marine and a cop, who always gave of himself / In such an unselfish way // Jeremy got back in his squad car and was shot in a baseless attack / In San Diego town, a hero is down / Three times a Marine in Afghanistan and Iraq / But his biggest mistake was comin' back / Shot in his cop car while the sun was bright / In City Heights that afternoon / He died the next morning with the setting moon // His chief said Jeremy challenged himself each day / To protect his community and his nation / Acts of kindness were his way / Of fulfilling his obligation / As a US citizen at home and abroad / Rest In Peace, Captain Henwood, you did a great job // Jeremy got back in his squad car and was shot in a baseless attack / In San Diego town, a hero is down / He was a troop you couldn't ignore / Defending America on foreign shores / Three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan / Henwood was one hell of an American / Henwood was a hell of an American Sunshine State sensuality, compliments of Mitchell Stone--a FLORIDA MAN (TRACK 12) Sizzlin' silhouettes sparkle as the sun sets low in the west / Sweat soaks my chest as my hand moves across your breasts / It's all right as you heave and sigh, and I feel your caress / And the ocean's on fire as we burn with desire from tropical tenderness / Yes the ocean's on fire as we burn with desire from tropical tenderness // I was born and bred in Florida like the oranges on the trees / Born and bred in Florida like the salt air from the seas / Latin beats and steamy streets and layin' on the sand / I'm a Florida man with a Florida tan / And the hurricane force of a Florida man // You move like palm trees sway, as starfish play in the ocean...yeah / My tropical toy, I can feel the joy from your emotion / Seagulls fly as we lie entangled in the dimming light / Darkness enshrouds us, the sky goes black, but everything is bright / 'cause I got you, and you got me on this sexy subtropical night // I was born and bred in Florida like the oranges on the trees / Born and bred in Florida like the salt air from the seas / Latin beats and steamy streets and layin' on the sand / I'm a Florida man, got a Florida tan / And the hurricane force of a Florida man // With gator-like reflexes and heat in the groove / I handle your sultry moves / You feel the shark in me takin' liberties / So natural...hot...and steamy / Hardly acceptable per Florida law / I leave you in a state of awe // If you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen / Get out of the Everglades / I meet your needs and you must concede / To my tawdry tropical plays / I make you feel the Florida in me with heat from sunlit days / Baby, feel the Florida in me with heat from sunlit days // I was born and bred in Florida like the oranges on the trees / Born and bred in Florida like the salt air from the seas / Latin beats and steamy streets and layin' on the sand / I'm a Florida man with a Florida tan / And the hurricane force of a Florida man // A Florida man--I got that Florida tan / Hurricane force of a Florida man This is a great driving song! DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE (TRACK 15) Doesn't matter where you can be found / In a juke joint or Churchill Downs / In the Bluebird Cafe or the Taj Mahal / With my neck on the line or my back to the wall / You've been on my mind and it's you I'll find // I'm gonna drive, drive, drive / Drive 'til I get where I'm goin' / Who's gonna stand in my way? / Absolutely no one / I'm gonna drive, drive, drive, drive, drive / Drive 'til I arrive / Not sure where I'll start / But I'll drive my love to your heart // Got no time to read or surf the net / I'll just get in my car and speed like a jet / If I drive through a hurricane, I'll get wet / Windblown and cruddy, dirty and muddy / I'll move 'til I find you and I'll sleep when I'm dead // I'm gonna drive, drive, drive / Drive 'til I get where I'm goin' / Who's gonna stand in my way? / Absolutely no one / I'm gonna drive, drive, drive, drive, drive, yeah / Drive 'til I arrive / Not sure where I'll start / But I'll drive my love to your heart // Double down baby, double down / Don't phase me if you ain't in town / Machu Pichu or a castle or Capetown / I'll drive 'til I find ya--drive all alround / Speed like a cheetah to be witchya / So double down baby, double down // I'm gonna drive, drive, drive, yeah / Drive 'til I get where I'm goin' / Who's gonna stand in my way? / Absolutely no one / I'm gonna drive, drive, drive, drive, drive / Drive 'til I arrive / Not sure where I'll start / But I'll drive my love to your heart // To your heart / To your heart / To your heart / YEAH! / To your heart If you're a music lover with any degree of fondness for the 1960s and songs like Don McLean's "American Pie" or Cashman & West's "American City Suite" appeal to you, Mitchell Stone's "Memories of Memories" is right up your alley--and will also make you nostalgic for that period. MEMORIES OF MEMORIES (TRACK 10) Baseball was still the American game / A phone booth call was just a dime / Mister Ed was talkin' then...the Flintstones in their prime / I wanna hold your hand, my funny valentine / (You know when I'm talkin' of) / Meant a boy and a girl were so in love // Movie trailers trailed movies / Elvis was the king / Dick and Liz were Tony and Cleo / He gave her a ring / Mickey Mantle was a household name / Dylan had just started on that road to fame // I've got those memories of memories / Of a time simpler than today / When the dollar made a hundred cents / And the champ was Cassius Clay / The Indian and the masked man / Were a team that couldn't die / And terror was a movie called "The Fly" // Jackie was the lady of the land / And the drive-in was an A&W stand / Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot / Were the girls who were snappy / And bein' gay was not risque / It just meant you were happy / Every day in that time frame / Is etched in my mind / When the Wichita lineman / Hadn't yet got on the line // Memories of memories / Of a time simpler than today / When the dollar made a hundred cents / And the champ was Cassius Clay / The Indian and the masked man / Were a team that couldn't die / And terror was a movie called "The Fly" // Then, we never knew that we would long for days that just flew on by / But memories give us ways of makin' sure the good times don't just die / When swimmin' with sharks and gettin' lots of sun were oh so overrated / Long ago, we didn't know it'd get so complicated / All those years ago, we didn't know that beetles were not just bugs / Cough syrup and castor oil were considered the heavy drugs // Memories of memories / Of a time simpler than today / When the dollar made a hundred cents / And the champ was Cassius Clay / The Indian and the masked man / Were a team that couldn't die / And terror was a movie called "The Fly" // All around were cars with fins / And Good Humor trucks that chimed / Fries and burgers were our friends / We thought those times would never end / When love songs really rhymed // Memories of memories / Of a time simpler than today / When the dollar made a hundred cents / And the champ was Cassius Clay / The Indian and the masked man / Were a team that couldn't die / And terror was a movie called "The Fly" // Terror was a movie called "The Fly" A modern-day love song: NOT MY SOAP OPERA (TRACK 3) Ice caps gettin' watery, who won the lottery / A rapper rapped his girl's head / Hurricanes killed 50 dead / The market's down a thousand points / It's headed for a hole / Politicians want my vote / But I don't do no polls / Everybody wants a piece / Of what I oughtta be / But when it comes to takin' part / In things not of the heart / You know it ain't for me // That's not my soap opera / Not how I roll / Not my soap opera / That makes me rock and roll / If current events could cure me / I'd be an automaton / The world turned before me / And it will when I'm gone / So let history repeat itself / And let the dance go on // I need nothin' fancy / No news to make me think / No stories in the headlines / To keep me in sync / The only things I care about / Are simply you and me / Our news is the good stuff / That's how it's meant to be // A killer escaped from jail last night / And now he's on the loose / A tree fell in the forest / But can you give me proof? / The social network is the place / That get some people stoked / But you know that scene is not my way / I don't need to be poked // That ain't my soap opera / Not how I evolve / It ain't my soap opera / Don't wanna get involved / The only things I care about / Are simply you and me / Our news is the good stuff / That's how it's meant to be // Market crashes, unemployment, inflation and desert wars / Stalkers, killers, bank robbers just tend to make me bored / What happens on this planet don't fill me full of grief / 'cause you are all that matters, yeah you are my belief / When it comes to livin' life, you're my destiny / And other people's problems don't mean too much to me // The world ain't my soap opera / That's not how I roll / It ain't my soap opera / That makes me rock and roll / The only things I care about / Are simply you and me / Our news is the good stuff / That's how it's meant to be // The world has a virus / And everything's a mess / Swine flu's up, the market's down / And everyone has stress / But to really push my buttons / To make me long for more / I have to hear some talk about / The one that I adore / The only things I care about / Are simply you and me / Our news is the good stuff / That's how it's meant to be // The world ain't my soap opera / That's not how I roll / It ain't my soap opera / That makes me rock and roll / The only things I care about / Are simply you and me / Our news is the good stuff / That's how it's meant to be / Our news is the good stuff / That's how it's meant to be / The bulletin is OUR news / That's how it's meant to be In Mitchell Stone's tribute to Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway, the songwriter incorporates some of the author's book titles in the song's lyric lines. HEMINGWAY (TRACK 7) Oh Hemingway, Hemingway oh / What a bad way to go / It's you for whom the bell tolls / With your books adored by those who read / They loved every word you wrote / But when you put a bullet in your head / You didn't even leave a note // Man of adventure, man of doom / Why did you off yourself in your living room? Old man and the sea / In Cuba, Key West, and Spain / Placed your last order at the land's-end cafe / What a sad way to go / Oh Hemingway, oh / Oh Hemingway, oh // Oh Hemingway, fishin' in the Gulf / Catchin' the marlin and shark / On safari in Africa, the sun also rises / But at home, alone in the dark / With no more bridges to burn / You caused your death in the afternoon / When you thought you had nowhere to turn // Man of adventure, man of doom / Why did you off yourself in your living room? Old man and the sea / In Cuba, Key West, and Spain / Placed your last order at the land's-end cafe / What a bad way to go / Oh Hemingway, oh / Oh Hemingway, oh // It's not that your kids didn't try / Gave you grandchildren--even Mariel / But when your thoughts all ran dry / You perceived it as goin' to hell / Drinking, worry, paranoia / Finally took their toll / Papa, you made your readers cry / When you rang that final bell // Man of adventure, man of doom / Why did you off yourself in your living room? Old man and the sea / In Cuba, Key West, and Spain / Placed your last order at the land's-end cafe / What a sad way to go / Oh Hemingway, oh / Oh Hemingway, oh // Oh Hemingway, oh Stone designed this song to appeal to the patriot: PROUD TO SAY WE'RE THE U.S.A. (TRACK 8) What's become of our nation? What sickness have we got? / Folks apologize for America with no rational prior thought / No negatives about the USA! That don't fly in my country / No need to feel guilty that patriots are winners / Those who diss the good ol' U.S. are the sinners // I'm proud to say we're the USA, proud to fly the flag / Raise the Stars and Stripes high, anything less is a drag / You can't bring our freedom down, you just can't deal us out / We're the United States of America--pride's what we're about / So if you don't like it here, I'll make it clear, it's time for me to shout / I'm proud to say we're the USA, and I'm proud to fly the flag / Raise the Stars and Stripes high, anything less is a drag / Anything less is a drag // If you don't like the USA, it's better that you leave / Don't let the door knock you to the floor if you really don't believe / Just make your way out the USA, 'cause patriots won't cry / If we lose one more who's against the U.S., it's really for the best // Proud to say we're the USA, proud to fly the flag / Raise the Stars and Stripes real high, anything less is a drag / Anything less is a drag // It's not nice to mess around with we who love liberty / We get rather pissed off when you diss opportunity / 'cause we know when we go to vote in any free election / If we don't like the choice we made, we can later change the selection / The Land of the Free is the land for me, and it's gonna stay that way / So keep your negatives to yourself about the good ol' USA // Proud to say we're the USA, proud to fly the flag / Raise the Stars and Stripes high, anything less is a drag / You can't bring our freedom down, you cannot deal us out / We're the United States of America--pride's what we're about / So if you don't like it here, I'll make it clear, it's time for me to shout / I'm proud to say we're the USA, and I'm proud to fly the flag / Raise the Stars and Stripes high, anything less is a drag / Anything less is a drag / Don't drag the flag / Anything less is a drag / USA / Anything less is a drag / Yeah...don't drag the flag / Don't drag that flag / 'cause anything less is a drag Some people who've heard Mitchell Stone's "New York City" have said it could rival the long-standing City anthem "New York, New York." NEW YORK CITY (TRACK 9) New York City, best place in the world / If you were a woman, baby you'd be my girl / They can't knock you down / You'll always be around / New York City--what a town // I'd go in the morning, I'd go there at night / The lady gives no warning when she turns off the lights / But still she's the girl who stole my heart / So damn good, she comes in five parts / Brooklyn, Staten Island, The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens / See and be seen...and how / Mmmmm, do the countdown now: / 8 million people / 7 state parks / 6 teams for sports / 5 mighty boroughs / 4 Seasons Hotel / 3 airports / 2 make me say well well well well well well well, you're / 1 great girl / New York City - you rock my world / Ooooohh, yeah // Hot dog stands, the delis, the Statue, and Broadway / You're mine and you'll stay that way / If you were a woman, you'd be my girl / Fresh Big Apple / The best in the world // New York City, you're for me / Got lotsa love for you, ya see / Ooh, East Side, West Side, the Yanks and the Mets / Islanders, Rangers, Knicks / And the Giants and the Jets / Harlem, Little Italy, the Village, Wall Street, Gramercy / Flatbush, the Hudson, the great East River / New York City / You stand and deliver // Great transportation...Grand Central Station / The Subway, zoos, museums, the plays / The best in the nation / Uptown, Downtown, Central Park, and Chinatown / "The girl for me" // NYPD...FDNY...NYC, you're the girl for me / New York City--ooh what a town / You'll always be around / Best city in the world / If you were a woman, baby you'd be my girl // New York City "Wayward Sailor" is a song Mitchell Stone wrote after one of his performances at the Wayward Sailor Pub in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. WAYWARD SAILOR (TRACK 11) A wayward sailor drifted into town / Went in a pub and put his money down / Said his woman made him feel like a clown / So got a 44-smokeless and shot her down // Fire in the hole, whiskey in his glass / She laid him low, so he put her in a bind / He drank her off his mind / He drank her off his mind / Drank 'til he was blind / Said she was so unkind // A wayward sailor came in from the sea / Said that devil woman was his destiny / Without her he could not be free / Determined to join her in eternity // Fire in the hole, whiskey in his glass / She laid him low, so he put her in a bind / He drank her off his mind / He drank her off his mind / Drank 'til he was blind / Said she was so unkind // Now this wayward sailor'd been around the world / But was always seeking a home-loving girl / Met one in Antigua, when she said pleased to meet ya / He was taken by her charms / They married and procreated, but love is overrated / For his love later laid him low, and made another sailor her beau / So our wayward sailor who'd been east and west, north and south / Lost control and put a gun in his mouth // Fire in the hole, whiskey in his glass / She laid him low, so he put her in a bind / He drank her off his mind / He drank her off his mind / Drank 'til he was blind / Said she was so unkind // A wayward sailor and his untrue wife / Leave seven kids alone to go through life / Pray for children, pray for peace / Pray for wayward sailors on the seven seas // He drank her off his mind This song is based on a true story: a music-business incident that happened to Mitchell Stone--as it does to countless musicians every day. WE DON'T PAY TO GET PLAYED (TRACK 4) I was surfin' last night on my Facebook page / When a former friend from a different age / Sent me a chat that got my attention / He was a deejay when I was a deejay several years ago / Now he's in record promotion / Tryin' to give it a go / He said some of your songs hold promise / I can get 'em on the radio / I said if you're chargin' to get 'em played, my friend / My reply must be no / The radio biz is different now and I don't play the game / What some people do to get their songs played / Can only be called a shame // That's right, I said we don't pay to get laid, and we don't pay to get played / If it's money you'll need to play my songs / Then you'll have to make other plans / 'cause we don't pay to get played, and we don't buy our fans // Yeah the music industry's different now / Than what it used to be / You can rip and burn and download songs / A lot of 'em are free / The internet got bands' plans waylaid / But we don't pay to get played // I said we don't pay to get laid, and we don't pay to get played / If it's money you'll need to play my songs / You'll have to make other plans / 'cause we don't pay to get played, and we don't buy our fans // Now, it mightta been different when I was a boy / When I was writin' for fun and my guitar was a toy / But if I gotta pay to get my music to people / I'll do what my pal Rick Nelson said, and drive a truck instead / Y'see I write with my brain and I don't drain my 401k / To get my songs on the radio / That just ain't the way to go // Yeah we don't pay to get laid, and we don't pay to get played / If it's money you'll need to play my songs / You'll have to make other plans / 'cause we don't pay to get played, and we don't buy our fans // We don't pay to get played / And we don't buy our fans / We don't buy our fans / We don't buy our fans A beautiful, almost surreal Mitchell Stone love song is ANGEL BIRD (TRACK 19) You came to earth, you spoke the word / You spread your wings and then I heard / Your voice was soft, your words were clear / The finest sounds I ever did hear // Angel bird, my angel bird / Your voice speaks the word / Flap your wings and kiss the sun / Don't singe your lips 'cause you're the one / You are golden, you are kind / You're this Earth man's greatest find // How ya got here, I don't know / You fell from Heaven and let love flow / You spread your wings and gave a glow / Your spirit put on a show // Angel bird, my angel bird / Your voice speaks the word / Flap your wings and kiss the sun / Don't singe your lips 'cause you're the one / You are golden, you are kind / You're this Earth man's greatest find // Angel bird, have you heard / Your power has a hold on me / You're the flower in the garden / Where I'd always wanted to be / Now I have no more burdens / 'cause you are here with me // Angel bird, my angel bird / Your voice speaks the word / Flap your wings and kiss the sun / Don't singe your lips 'cause you're the one / You are golden, you are kind / You're this Earth man's greatest find // Angel bird, you give me love / You fit me like a glove The generational love of a family tree grows...and grows...in the country-tinged Mitchell Stone song HE CALLS HER PRETTY (TRACK 17) Hey Pretty, come and sit by me / And make me happy, make me happy / When we were kids, ages six and nine / I always knew you were a friend of mine / Then when we grew, in our teens I knew / I had a friend for life in little you // And I called you Pretty, that was your name / I called you Pretty and you became / A friend of mine, and a lover too / I knew with you I couldn't lose // When you were 20, I said marry me / It's then I knew we would always be / So come on, Pretty, I said be my bride / And always stay right here, right by my side // And I called you Pretty, that was your name / I called you Pretty, you were my flame // Mama used to say to Daddy, when they'd sit on the front porch bench / Joe always calls her Pretty / Like you did when we first went / And the people that surrounded us, they always came to know / The couple we became as being / Pretty and her hubby Joe // And I said hey Pretty, baby can't you see // It's time we start a family / So we had Joey, and he grew too / He goes with Katie, and she loves him too // And you sit here, right by my side / And you say Katie will make a lovely bride / And he calls her Pretty, like I called you / You say they look like we used to / And now they have a daughter too // And he calls her Pretty--what else would it be / And so the circle goes 'round, you see // I call you Pretty / Come and sit by me / And make me happy, make me happy Do you like money?
