One of the biggest challenges as a songwriter is to expand the universe in which we write beyond the confines of what's been done a million times. A quick glance at the charts will leave you with a majority of songs about love. Don't get me wrong - there's no issue with that, and I've written my fair share of songs about love and heartbreak, but I think we can push ourselves to explore uncharted territory (no pun intended). That's what I tried to do with this project. A five-song EP, Holden Miller v. The State of California visits the central theme of facing adversity in life. However, we explore this journey in new ways by comparing mental illness to feeling like being "eaten by flowers", conquering bullying like it's a video game, and struggling to fit in with a metaphor of a scrutinized beekeeper who lives in a van. This might sound crazy, but it all works. This EP is unique but relatable, and silly while still poignant. I couldn't be more proud and excited to share a project with the world.
