Jude is a historian and archivist who delves into different historical periods in her dark storytelling. A FEW HIGHLIGHTS Title track, ‘Doodlebug Alley’, is a song of love and lust set in Blitz-era South London. ‘Jolly Roger’ is an Angela Carter inspired study of abortion, while its wit and surreal humour is reminiscent of Vivian Stanshall or Neil Innes. ‘Navajo Joe’ deals with the difficult theme of bestiality, and owes a debt to comic genius of Tom Lehrer, who is a great influence. The Incredible String Band are another influence and this is notable in the gentle folk adaptation, ‘Alien Folk Valediction’, which is a slanted, atmospheric meditation on death and the immersion of the individual consciousness into the greater cosmos. Her first, To America, was released in 1999.
