简介
Greeting from The Drugstore Cowboys. Est. 1972. Winston James {Dub} Robinson here. I’m writing to let you know of about a single recording we’re releasing entitled “Texas Boy”. It is the 1st in a series of songs we’ll be releasing that are a collaboration between the DSC and Al Gomez and Henry Rivas from the West Side Horns as well as other SA music legends. They will all eventually lead to a Cd entitled “It Is What It Is” which will be the title cut. This is East Side meets the West Side somewhere around the Melody Ranch on Roosevelt with a little side trip to Jamaica then Baton Rouge on the way back to the East Side Baptist Church. I am proud to say it is Puro San Antonio in spite of the side trips. I believe in serendipity and one day the Horns showed up to record on Rich Halls project [which kicks ass!] here at Texart Studios on the far East Side. I happened to have a tune I wrote honoring Doug Sahm that was screaming for horn parts. I told them it was about their old bossman and asked if they would play on it. I also asked them to put the “Chingausos” on it and when they showed up to play I was completely knocked out by what they came up with. I closed my eyes and I was on the Riverwalk drinking Carte Blanca eating enchiladas. Mission accomplished. I wrote the song because I hadn’t heard one written about Doug at the time, which was a few years ago. I wrote it out of respect. Since then Al and Henry have recorded 6 more tunes of mine with another 4 on deck. That’s just a start. Jan Zerda also sings on some of the tunes and it is a very nice marriage of styles. A Wonderful vocalist and guitarist, Jan and I are on our 20th year of performing together. Other than my Mom Jan is the MOST patient woman I’ve ever known! Lol. We have shows scheduled at Hondos in Fredericksburg on May 22, Torre de Pietra Winery in Stonewall on May 30, John T. Floores and will eventually record a live DVD in the future. I never planned on this, Al and Henry just showed up one day and we started recording the tunes. I can’t describe the vibe they brought to the studio and I think it translates well on the CD. Upon their suggestion, we’ve done a few impromptu shows and working with them live took care of one of my bucket list wishes. I was not disappointed, thrilled is more like it, and having them on my recordings takes another wish off the list. They like the tunes! I am very proud of that, especially coming from them. Kenny Grohman, John Santos, Little Larry Roberson, Rich Hall and W.J. Robinson are on this as well as other cuts that will be released periodically. Their contributions are spot on. I couldn’t ask for better. I hope to include other SA musicians throughout this endeavor. I also hope it will wake up SA to what an incredible group of musicians surround and live in our city, and that the sound we create is one of a kind. Live music needs a kick in the ass around here, seems awful quiet lately. Stay Tuned!
