"Over the Fens" is the culmination of many hours spent recording, mixing, listening & re-mixing between studios in Nashville & North Carolina. The result? A cohesive collection of infectious pop/rock, both electric & acoustic, employing full use of the stereo spectrum, with several surprises along the way. Many of the songs were originally written in what was then the "Fensgate" dorm at Boston's Emerson College. In fact, this effort is a musical trip across the globe & back in under 40 minutes, with stops in the aforementioned Nashville & Boston, plus New York & parts of Europe. There's literally "never a dull moment" in this collection. The opening, pseudo-classical "A Minor Prelude" (written when August was just 15) launches the listener, full-throttle, into "R U," which segues into the drum beats of "That's OK." The early elation is later tempered with the loneliness of "Jōb," before returning to several more crafty pieces of pop, including the wry "Wasn't Even There" (another melody written by August as a young teen, lyrically revamped in all but the opening line). The collection winds down with a couple of acoustic tracks. "Amigo" is a touching tribute to the late Ricardo Camacho, one of August's early "best friends" at Emerson. (The two met when August heard Camacho, a native of Colombia, boisterously singing & playing Spanish guitar from atop the Fensgate stairwell, his clear voice resonating throughout the 11-story "cathedral.") The final number, "One Day We'll Know," is a bonus demo, recorded on a digital Akai 8-track in 2006. "Over the Fens" is about as close as one can come to early '70s style pop music & production sensibilities, but with the benefit of 21st century technology (& minus the bell bottoms & the kitsch). Listener beware - these songs are ear-worms. They may be stuck in your head for quite some time. And that's a good thing.
