That may seem like an odd statement, but I'm sure everyone has heard those groups that feature three-minute mediocre guitar solos and a slightly off-time rhythm section. Lowman's newest release, EP!, reflects expert musicianship and a knowledge of that elusive art of knowing when -not- to play. The lead guitar knows exactly how to complement the overall sound of the album, while also recognizing when it is appropriate to wail for a few seconds. I particularly enjoyed the opening track, "Balloon Boy," with its Spoon/Ben Folds piano-driven influence. Two other versions of the same song are included on EP!, "Balloon Boy (reprise)" and "Balloon Boy (full length)." I thought that the full length version was the most dynamic, with an extended guitar solo bleeding into total chaos at its conclusion as the entire band enters into full-on freak-out mode. Overall, I found Lowman's EP! to be quite an entertaining collection of songs. If you like hearing bands that really play as a cohesive unit (as opposed to four or five guys separately rockin' out), you'll love what Lowman has created." --Daniel McMahon, Deli New England 1/2012 “a distinctive mixing of slam poetry and music.” -Gaetana Brown, UNRegular Radio 1/2012 For the most part, “Balloon Boy” follows a rigid construction, built upon staccato piano chords and a snippy rhythm. The thing about “Balloon Boy” is how it uses this mode as a context for when the song sort of lets loose and starts to break outside those rails. And don’t you worry – it definitely does. The first hint of this song’s other personalities shines through shortly after 1:00 in the program, and the guitar uses this little precedent to start its own odyssey away from the song’s implied structure. Once the orderlies restore, well, order; it’s as if the song has a taste for freedom and can’t let go. The song goes through several variations, all over the initial protest and eventual accomplice of the piano, that sort of throws up its hands and says to itself – as sometimes you just have to say, “When in Rome.” “Balloon Boy” doesn’t just start normal and go crazy. It passes through several portals on its way to the manic grand finale. The hot-air balloon is an interesting metaphor for this track – “Balloon Boy” makes a drifting trip, subject to the whims of atmospheric conditions and whatever the passing geese want to do to it. The trip is, at different times majestic, unnerving and, uh, nerving. “Balloon Boy” changes before your very eyes, transforming on the fly into whatever it needs to be at the moment.
