简介

by Thom Jurek Recorded in Köln in a single afternoon during December of 1993, this jam session between pianist Georg Graewe, cellist Ernst Reijseger , and drummer Gerry Hemingway is, for the most part, a series of smaller pieces, ranging in length from just under two minutes to just over seven. What seems to be at stake in all of them is the element of time and the way it towers over an ensemble in performance. Tonal barriers are easily broken, timbral expenditures are adventurous but again, easy to manipulate for a little more or less color. Striated harmonic palettes are gravy of the improviser. But to work in a solid combination of these methodologies in a time-constrained environment is more of a challenge; it's one that creates tension and as sense of immediacy that can be perplexing especially if an instrumentalist or ensemble is trying to create malleable textures within the constraints of spatial relationships and time. That is the m.o. here, and to a large degree it works splendidly. These three are masters at working around time, moving through it in such a way that nothing sounds hurried and everything is sonant and communicable. There are many languages being spoken in these brief interludes, all of them mysterious and rich enough to expand into an entire universe of its own.
