by Mike As a special treat, I get to start this week with a little stack of records that are relevant to my interests. There's stuff from In The Red and Castle Face and Siltbreeze and Hardly Art but I'm kicking off my day with a couple from psych rock specialists Cardinal Fuzz, who this week have LPs by Heads-related space rockers Anthroprophh and Portuguese bong rock trio Black Bombaim. We've got two side-long pieces on this LP, fairly restrained psych jams in a warm and krauty vein not unlike Causa Sui, but each building up to some extravagantly fuzzy guitar soloing while the rhythm section putters along with earthy tones but mechanical precision. Each track features a different collaborator, with 'Africa II' on side A working its way up to a fretwanking fury before the guitarist steps back to allow room for the honking sax of Rodrigo Amado in some exuberantly squeaky hard grooving kraut-jazz indulgence. Over on the flip the guest is Luis Fernandes on modular synth and electronics, so as you would expect this one is a bit more cosmic than the other, venturing even further into Hawkwind territory than the first side with its hypnotic infinity riffing and outer space whooshes and squiggles. It's not just a clever name.
