简介

A moving story involves not only enticing storylines and magical words that take the listeners for a ride, but also an effective storyteller that interprets and sets them up on that adventure. A musical, emotional adventure is exactly what storyteller John Scheaffer does with his band, Ceramic's debut, self-titled EP. In 2003, Scheaffer picked up his homemade recordings and took them to New York where he teamed up with producer Charles Newman who had just wrapped up Magnetic Field's i (Nonesuch) and Quicksand's Walter Schriefels' The Walking Concert (Some Records). "Charles has a great sensibility in helping the musician capture the essence of a song," Scheaffer explains. This is apparent in "Down to the Bone," the first song written after his move to New York. He continues, "A simple song and a simple method of capturing the guitar and voice simultaneously, two mics placed in what we call in the recording world, "the sweet spot." Harmonium, Marxophone, and Cymbal were added to color the atmosphere created. The result is a remarkably vivid sound of vocals and guitar, the sound exposing a vulnerable voice and instrument. Tracks like the EP's opening "Wake up the Rain" exhibits a weave of melodic guitars and percussion juxtaposed with Scheaffer's voice supported by the finesse of Kendall Meade's (Mascott, Sparklehorse) background vocals. Ceramic's debut EP is being released this spring through Mother West/Papercup Music and the band will be doing shows around the East Coast in support of the record.
