Inspired by various religious and musical traditions 'Homeland' contains nine meditative, rhythmical songs and poetic soundscapes that take the listener on a contemporary pilgrimage. The album is ostensibly a collection of songs created for a church or spirit-community – there are chants, ‘freedom songs’ and ‘journey’ songs that draw lyrically from ideas of Dr Martin Luther King Jr, St John of the Cross, Rumi, and other religious traditions. So it is not an album of ‘personal’ songs, but songs that a group, or community might sing on the way to the ashram or to a protest action – a bit like ‘Kumbayah’ but with more grunt … Along with acoustic and dobro guitar you'll find these sounds and musicians: tabla – Kate Tempany bass – James Ryan flute and backing vocals – Lauren Bell (Lamarama) banjo – Peter Somerville backing vocals – Peter Haydon keyboards and programming – Mark Hughes Add to these keen Australian musos a range of Arabic drum loops and raw percussion (bells, old metal mop buckets full of water) and you have a sense of where it’s all going.
