简介
“Wood and Wire” was recorded in the Nickson room at the University of Queensland on July the 8th and 9th 2012. David Galea: Electric and Acoustic bass (All tracks) Trent Bryson Dean: Drums (All tracks) Ben Carr: Saxophone (All tracks) Cleon Barraclough: Piano (Tracks 2,4,7,9) Chris Poulsen: Piano (Tracks 1,3,5,6,8,10) James Whiting: Vibes (Tracks 1,3,5,6,8,10) Joshua Hatcher: Alto Saxophone (Tracks 2,9) “Wood and wire”: These are the very elements that go into creating beautiful acoustic instruments and none more so than the grand piano, the intended sonic focal point of this recording. “Wood and Wire” are also the very elements that give the acoustic bass and the electric bass the beautiful sonic qualities that they posses, obviously two instruments very close to my heart. “Wood and wire” was always going to be a live, all in one room modern jazz recording. Thanks to a few suggestions via Facebook the Nickson room was discovered as an ideal location for the type of recording that I desired to do. I really wanted all in the group have the chance to interact as if they were performing live to an audience as if to try and emulate a live gig. This approach calls for complete takes of tunes with no chance of overdubs. Each of the tracks on this album are whole takes with no editing carried out. Each track has been selected for the vibe that it posses (no pun intended) and not necessarily the most “note perfect” take. Many thanks must go to Peter Freeman for making it possible for us to record in the Nickson Room and have use of the one of two beautiful Steinway pianos that reside there. I would also like to thank Brett Cheney for being so open to recording the band in one room, he did an amazing job in capturing the beautiful live sound of the room and it was a great excuse to just hang out for two days, thanks Cheney. I would also like to thank Ben, Trent, Cleon, Chris, James, and Josh for playing so beautifully, it was a real pleasure to just sit back and listen as you guys brought these compositions to life, not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined them turning out as good as they have, so thanks guys. A big shout out must go to my mate Lisle for taking the photos used on the album and also for inspiring “Android.” Thanks must go to Rowen Staples who custom made my killer 6 string “Beardy Bass- Big J the third“. If you look closely in the photos you can see him there on the bass. Very Special thanks finally must go to my beautiful wife Erica and beautiful daughter Chynah. Your love inspires me to be a better person; thanks for your undying support and for putting up with bass guitars lying all round the house. Enjoy David Galea
