简介

Throughout his musical history, Bo Green has always identified strongly with americana and roots country music. While punking it up with the Jiks in Toronto in the '80s, he played solo country sets on the side. His '90s Vancouver-based folk-rock band Green Achers featured many of the country songs he had written to that point. And when he returned to Toronto, he made his roots country songs the main focus of his act. Out of that focus comes his latest release "It Don't Weigh Nuthin'", an album of eight new originals and one cover. The album and title track, "It Don't Weigh Nuthin'" are dedicated to a friend who was lost in a crushing random act of violence in Vancouver in 1991. The track, last on the record and largest in arrangement, features many of the musicians who appear on the rest of the record. The New Jakes, as opposed to being a band, are a rotating collection of talented local Toronto musicians who Bo uses frequently in his live shows, and who figure prominently on the album. The arrangements vary, with some tracks using electric bass and drums, and others using an all acoustic lineup. Fiddle, dobro or pedal steel, and mandolin all appear most frequently to complement Bo's acoustic rhythm guitar and vocals. Only on "Coattails" does the arrangement deviate, with electric guitars, electric bass and drums making the release decidedly less country and more americana. In line with his previous work, Green's eight originals on this release paint a picture of heartbreak and loss, with only a hint of softness on ballads like "When You Cry" and "I'll Give You Everything". From the haunting melody "Waiting" to the more hopeful title track, the mood of this record is: hurtin' but never hopeless.
