For this outing, Billy & Al call on Undulate’s man of the hour, James Ellis; and as expected, Mr. Ellis answers with a monster EP under his tech infused guise, Feline 9. ‘Right About Now’ is a groovy slice of techy goodness that features stellar remixes by Cyclic Records’ boss, Mihai Popoviciu, and Undulate staple, Frankie Pep. Mihai gets filthy on this one and stamps that unmistakable dark groovy signature on his mix. A haunting lead and spaced-out synth frame a simple, yet commanding bass groove and stabby vocal snip that’s used more as a rhythmic device than a sample. Frankie Pep goes a bit deep on his remix but manages to keep the energy level exactly where it needs to be. Pep masterfully layers a deliciously warm and meaty bass over a super-crisp handful of sharp hats and provocative percs. This one chugs along right through to the runout. Last remix comes from Ellis himself as he turns his own original on its head and churns out a mix as Audioshapes (yup, 2 different monikers on the same EP) that’s precise and gets right to the point. Ellis cooks up an aural melting pot of retro drums and percussive elements, as well as some nice synth programming and melodic touches; each working hand in hand to create a more house-based vibe headed-up by a warbling bass line.
