Pheno (fee-no) is Australian electric guitarist and singer Jess Green's new pseudonym. As Pheno she is pioneering her own style of Art-Pop. Influenced by artists such as Tune-Yards, Dirty Projectors and St Vincent, with a huge nod to 80’s heroes David Bowie and Talking Heads, the songs, written and co-produced by Jess, layer shimmering vocals, scorching electric guitars, synthesisers, and quirky beats. Lyrical material ranges from Sci-Fi musings in utero (There Are Voices Out There') to ethereal callings from the deep ('Shadow in The Water'). Aside from Green's warm and powerful vocals, and skilled, blazing guitar, the band features the cream of Australian Talent. Drummer, percussionist and creative producer Bree van Reyk (Paul Kelly, Holly Throsby, Darren Hanlon, Sally Seltman, Synergy Percussion), and Synths, vocals and co-production from Alyx Dennison (Alyx Dennison, Kyu, Richard In Your Mind). Also featured is Bass player Zoe Hautpmann (Paul Kelly, Lani Lane, Missy Higgins), and Tenor Saxophonist Matt Keegan (Sarah Belkner) and James Greening (Passenger). Production on the EP is lush but with lots of punch, and was recorded, mixed and co-produced by David Trumpmanis (Sarah Blasko, Flume, The Church). Jess has worked for over 15 years as a freelance musician, collaborating in World Music, Jazz, Rock and Blues, and she draws from this eclectic palette.
