Do beat machines daydream? If so, I’m convinced Farfalla has provided the soundtrack to many a DR 880 fantasy. Band mates Jay Thomas and Jason Herring (a/k/a DJ Husky and Jah-Sun Rising, respectively) weave electronic landscapes with inventive, creative bass and snare to create some of the most creative, imaginative music to ever come out of the south, let alone their adopted home of Charlotte,NC. Formed in 2003 after Herring had finished his work with his Latino Chrome and Interstellars projects, and Thomas completed his stint in the indie rock band Clarke Nova and Helicopter they released their first full length album, “Top and Tail” just one year later. Selections from the debut release found its way into the 2006 short film “Rotten” L.A Film festival favorite, and various commercials. Most exciting is that the group is primed and ready for their second long-player, entitled “Sound is Speeding “ . The project is guaranteed to raise their own expectation level of “What Is Hip?”, and push the envelope of what music from the “Dirty South” is understood to be. Combining progressive, hypnotic rhythms, neck snapping beats , deep, sometimes subliminal bass lines and samples that would make Prince Paul proud, Farfalla shows they are truly devoted to the art of moving butts, all the while challenging the listener to keep up with their ever changing gears.Farfallas’ “Sound is Speeding” is just what the doctor ordered….a massive attack on your senses, and a breath of fresh air for the musically frustrated.
