简介

New Colony Six专辑介绍:by Bryan ThomasOriginally from Chicago, the members of New Colony Six had moved to California where, before their discovery, they lived in the same apartment building as Paul Revere & the Raiders. 1968's Revelations was marked by a distinct shift in the group's sound. By this time, they had ditched their own Paul Revere-style colonial uniforms and began moving away from the garage rock sound of their earliest hits (including 1966's "I Confess"). Their new sound, instead, placed a heavy emphasis on studio-sheen production that emphasized bright horn arrangements and ballad-oriented soft rock vocalization. This new direction, which left them sounding a bit like the Association, brought them modest chart success, although fans of the group's earlier, more-bubblegummy sound lamented their left-turn toward AM radio pabulum in an obvious attempt to stay "hip." This album, nevertheless, contained their two biggest later-era hits, "Things I'd Like to Say" (number 16 on Billboard's Hot 100) and "I Will Always Think About You" (number 22). Both songs were co-written and featured lead vocal performances by Ronnie Rice, whose joining the band, in fact, led to their more pop direction. These two songs were the group's only substantial nationally charting hits during this period in their lengthy career, although "Can't You See Me Cry" was a minor hit at number 52. On August 4, 1969, vocalist Ray Graffia left the group he'd founded in 1965. New Colony Six remained together well into the early '70s, but never achieved this kind of chart success again. In 1996, Mercury Japan released a CD entitled Best of New Colony Six, leading their fans to think it was a new greatest-hits collection when, in fact, it was a two-fer CD combining this album and their 1969 album Attacking a Straw Man. It was, at the time, the only compact disc of this material ever made available, though it is out of print.
