Johnny Hodges (1907-1970) is considered one of the definitive alto saxophone players of the big band era. His playing became one of the identifying voices of the Duke Ellington orchestra, being a permanent member of the band from 1928 until 1950. The recordings he produced under his own name are of legendary fame because he was permitted to use Ellington's musicians during the recording session with the Duke in person frequently joining the sessions as pianist.
