I'm going to sidestep the part where I talk about myself in the third person. Most acts write up something like "Nick Lee, coming off the hyperbole of his electrifying performance at the Tuesday Night open mic decided to make an album." Yeah, it's all fake. Anywho, I wrote Alcohol Is Gonna Kill Me Now throughout 2015. I was in about seven bands in 2014, and after the new year I decided to start a music project with the one creative entity I was most fearful to team up with: myself. Just kidding. How melodramatic would that be? It's a good time to be a songwriter. Music is so openly available that we can be inspired by all types of genres and approaches. Still, we all have those styles that speak to us more than others. The music we hear in our heads when we walk down the street to the coffee shop every morning before work. That's what I call our impulsive sensibility to a specific style or approach to music. I've always locked in pretty tight with delta blues music. I like how muddy those old blues recordings are and the repetitive nature of the lyrics. I tend to hop off the blues band wagon when the shredders get involved. Nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of tea. I would not say that any of these songs are representative of that style of music, but there is quite a bit of blues influence here on the album. It occupies that strange space where it is inspired by blues music but it is not necessarily blues in genre or approach. It's a mixed bag really. The first half is all acoustic. In truth, I actually recorded all the acoustic guitar and vocals live in my bedroom. After that, I added some bass and lead guitar when the spirit moved me. The latter half of the album is full band arrangements of a few more songs. All my friends were busy so I played all the parts. I sought to make an album that was more reactionary than methodical. I wanted to be surprised in the studio and allow my fingers to lead the way. I came home one evening from work, sat down at the dining room table and wrote the title track in about fifteen minutes. I felt good about, I knew that if I allowed myself any more time with it I would no doubt muck it up, so I set up a few microphones and recorded it live in one take. Not everything can be so immediate but that experience dictated my approach to this project. I had a blast making this album and I hope you enjoy listening to it.
