The first record released by the band independently in 1996. Many of the songs on this record were re-recorded with Toby Wright when the band signed with Warner/Reprise and re-released on In Moderation in 1999. Birth of a Cynic was recorded with producer/engineer Paul Lani their manager's converted garage.
