He was born in Basel and was invited by no other than Lionel Hampton at the tender age of 15 to jam on stage. After Jazz classes with Hans Feigenweiter he continued at the Conservatory of Music in Basel studying classical music with Peter Efler (Piano). He graduated with excellence in 1995 with a teacher’s diploma. Since then Brodbeck has proved his stylistic versatility in the most different formations. He was one of the principal founders of the experimental Hip Hop Groups Chapter 12 and P27. Andy Scherrer and Wolfgang Muthspiel are names and personalities with whom Brodbeck has been related and who have considerably contributed to his musical development. His first CD release ‘Ways to You’ (2002) was highly praised by the press. For his first Solo Album released only a year later, mainly introducing original compositions, he received very good reviews. Also, he continues to be a popular accompanying musician in many different formations. Today, Jean-Paul Brodbeck primarily performs with his trio, his new Band the Jean-Paul Brodbeck Group, with the new quartet of Wolfgang Muthspiel and shares his knowledge in different workshops and teaches the piano in the Jazz Department at the Conservatory of Music in Lucerne.
