简介

Ben Johnson and Harrison Alley met at Sonic in January of 2009 to discuss the finer things of life. Among these were life, liberty, and the possibility of making an album together. The odds were against them. They were young (17 and 17), inexperienced (17 and 17), and unusually talented. After finding no free studio space, they embarked on an epic quest to record, live, in Harrison Alley's bedroom. After clocking in approximately 175 hours of work on the album, they completed A New Brand Of Colour. Here's a word on each track: *() denote type of song *musician and instrument listed in order of appearance Love Will Help Us Through - This track was written primarily by Ben Johnson. He performed this song on his Roland Fantom X8 Keyboard. The Prospects particularly enjoy the soundtrackesque feel of this track. (ambient/electronic) Ben Johnson - ambiance on keyboard Where Are You? - As the first song The Prospects played live, this track also features a cameo from female vocalist Jennifer Keith. Some friends of The Prospects believe this will be the most popular track. However, these "friends" have heard only this song. Where Are You? closes with an ambient, if not a bit strange, guitar riff. This riff, performed by Harrison Alley in reverse chord order, was digitally reversed to achieve the original chord progression in its current glory. (soft piano ballad) Ben Johnson - piano on keyboard, vocals Jennifer Keith - vocals Harrison Alley - guitar Tomorrow - The Prospects' favorite part of this track is its simple power of the organ. The lyrics refer to uncertainty in love and caution in dealing with others as well as yourself. (simple organ rock) Ben Johnson - organ on keyboard, vocals Bonner - This song was created for Bonner Briggs. In her honor, we have created this techno track. This song also features the audio footage of The Prospects' encounter with Dualtone Music Group in which friend of The Prospects, Vincent Weir, successfully smuggled a demo CD into the famous hands of Lori Kampa. None of the demo tracks are on A New Brand Of Colour. (dance/techno) Ben Johnson - piano on keyboard, organ on keyboard, strings on keyboard, synth on keyboard, vocals Harrison Alley - digital drums, vocals 2 / 14 / 09 - In the spirit of Death Cab For Cutie, the lyrics narrate a real-life scenario in music form. It's anybody's guess as to when this happened. (soft acoustic guitar ballad) Harrison Alley - guitar Ben Johnson - vocals Trust You - This simple track describes the power of broken love. (soft guitar rock) Harrison Alley - guitar, vocals Ben Johnson - backup vocals, electric guitar on keyboard, bass on keyboard You Look So Pretty - This song is one of two tracks recorded at Ben Johnson's house on his acoustic piano. The track describes how a lover focuses his attention exclusively on that which he loves. (soft piano ballad) Ben Johnson - acoustic piano, vocals Summer Sun - Featuring the glass slide, Track 8 takes an experimental turn with sound and percussion. This song was recorded on the first take with only one microphone. (guitar jam) Harrison Alley - acoustic guitar with glass slide Ben Johnson - vocals, tambourine The Other Side - The banjo makes a long awaited appearance on this track. This is as folksy as it gets for The Prospects. In this song, The Prospects would like the listener to interpret the lyrics. There is only one right answer. (folksy banjo) Harrison Alley - banjo A New Brand Of Colour - A New Brand Of Colour's title track brings the album back from experimental styles to its acoustic rock roots. We would let you figure this one out too, but it's the album name. So we'll tell you. This makes the basic metaphor of comparing a person to a colour. Therefore a new brand of colour symbolizes something or someone that gives your life meaning. (acoustic guitar ballad) Harrison Alley - acoustic guitar Ben Johnson - vocals Lover's Lament - This is the second song recorded at Ben Johnson's house. This track experiments with digitally reversed sound waves and features The Prospects' friend, Brittany Howard, attempting to reach Ben on his phone. The lyrics are exceptionally straight-forward. (soft piano ballad) Ben Johnson - acoustic piano, vocals You Too - This song was almost released in its acoustic form but The Prospects decided to release the acoustic version at a later time. In The Prospects' opinion, the mood of the song is its greatest asset. (mellow rock) Harrison Alley - electric guitar, vocals Ben Johnson - vocals, electric guitar on keyboard, organ on keyboard Right And Wrong - Inspired by Death Cab For Cutie, this song features perhaps the greatest crescendo known to man. The Prospects would like to give a special thanks to the aforesaid Vincent Weir for his excellent critiques of the early versions of the song. This track begins with a Death Cab For Cutie feel and ends in true Sigur Ros fashion. The haunting falsetto and electronic strings were added by request from Vincent Weir. (soft acoustic ballad/rock) Harrison Alley - acoustic guitar, vocals Ben Johnson - electronic strings on keyboard, piano on keyboard, vocals Death Looks Better From Far Away - This track emerged from Love Will Help Us Through and features experimentation with digital audio reversal. The last half of the song is the first half backwards. (soft instrumental piano) Ben Johnson - piano on keyboard The Prospects would like to thank the Castillas for their tambourine.
