Passing it On. About 10 years ago, I was teaching on e of my many week long banjo classes in the old logging boom town of Cass, WVa. A young man from North Carolin whom I had taught in a weekend class down near his home showed up with carpenter's britches on, requesting with hi sdrawl "Am I too far 'North' to get some sweet tea??" This Darin Gentry commenced "woodsheddin" the banjo AND fiddle resulting in his becoming a truly great 'young' old time mountain musician. All of those folks in the lists who influenced, supported, and encouraged have allowed me to help Darin carry on within our traditions. Darin's ancestors go back many generations in northwest North Carolina. This has given him a deep sense of "the WAY" this old mountain music must be treated. He realizes our "powerful, yet fragile inheritance" is not to be used for his glory. This is just a partial list of the extremely generous folks who have done what they could to help me. But I am, musically speaking, an extremely slow learner. It took me from 1970 to Feb 2007 to finally catch on to the fiddle. Literally 37 years.
