Oscar Muñoz is an independent singer-songwriter from Southern California, residing in the city of Temecula. Born in Costa Rica, he came from modest beginnings, but found his home in the Inland Empire community of Alta Loma, CA where he spent his childhood and adolescence. Throughout his upbringing, Muñoz was surrounded by music, and has always been inspired by his father, an acoustic singer-songwriter himself, from an early age. When he was 15, after being heavily influenced by 90s skate punk and alternative rock, Muñoz and friends formed a garage punk rock band, “Lesser,” where he served as the lead singer and lyricist, and where he began delving into the craft of songwriting. The band disbanded, but the artistic seed had been planted, and Muñoz continued to write and compose throughout his high school years, performing at local house parties and get-togethers. While studying history at California State University San Bernardino, Muñoz was introduced to the melodic sway of Jack Johnson, put down his electric guitar, and began crafting songs that took on a mellower, earthier tone, self-recording an 8-song EP in 2006, “Costa,” which he passed out to friends and family. In 2007 he joined with his cousin, a drummer, and formed another garage band, “Lurline,” where Muñoz kept his songwriting and rock influences alive and strong. With the release of his newest album, “Pathways,” Muñoz meshes the vocal grit and smoke of his rock past with the calm, brightness and tranquil sway of his acoustic present. Enjoy.
